The first daily train to San José has just left Montevideo’s new "main station". It’s not a mixed train. The flat wagon with the empty containers serves as an intermediate wagon, due to the different type of couplings on the Alstom Locomotive and the Ganz-Mávag coaches. An old steam locomotive tender is added at the end of the train for the same purpose.

LATIN AMERICA NEWS

ARGENTINA

The Argentine Government has signed a contract worth USD123 mllions. for 24 diesel locomotives and 160 passenger coaches for the San Martin commuter line. This rolling stock will be built and delivered from China.

The first Alstom Citadis tram car was presented to the public mid January 2007. It will run on the new Puerto Madder experimental tram line at Buenos Aires.

 BOLIVIA

If the Bolivian Government  succeeds with re-nationalization of the railways in 2007, rebuilding the La Paz - El Alto - Oruro main line has first priority. Apparently only the Andean network may be re-introduced into state owned ENFE to start with. The Government hopes to get the railway back without paying a large amount, quoting that the Chilean stock holders got the network for "nearly nothing".

BRASIL

On Jan 17, 2007 CBTU Natal added some trains on the Natal - Nordelândia section of its Northern Line.

Metrô Teresina completed the elevated railway section at the Town Centre, and it should be open to traffic in Feb 2007. Of the three Ganz-Mávag trains the second  is under reconstruction.

Because of severe flooding at Campos (Rio de Janeiro state) all but one road bridges have been closed due to damage. This made the city and the state government to reinstate a free shuttle train service between the main station and suburbs on the other side of the Paraíba do Sul River. The train composition in charge is from Central and runs normally between Niteroí and Visconde do Itaboraí.

CHILE

On Jan 1, 2007 EFE reintroduced long distance services between Santiago and Talcahuano with two daily trains. If these trains will continue to run after the Summer period is still not known.

CUBA

In 2006 UFC’s passenger number decreased to 10'276'000 compared with 2005. The new Chinese locomotives helped to reduce fuel consumption significantly, and it was confirmed that from 2007 to 2009 another 100 of these locomotives will be delivered from China. At the end of 2006 freight traffic reached again levels of the 1980tis, this thanks to the rehabilitation of locomotives and freight wagons.

2007 was named the year of the infrastructure. In several regions sections of railway lines will be rehabilitated, thus around Habana, between Habana and Pinar del Rio, in Holguin province, and around Cienfuegos. 50'000 sleepers of national production will be used. About 700 pieces of rolling stock will be repaired in 2007; many of them have been transferred from the sugar ministry to UFC.

ECUADOR

To familiarize the local population with the railway, EFE Ecuador offers more or less regularly train trips on weekends from Riobamba to neighbouring towns, or even to Urbina. These trips are offered for free or at very low fares.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

2007 will see construction of the first electric suburban railway line from Port-of-Spain to Curepe. The first section of line will open in 2009; the whole line will be open to traffic in 2014.

URUGUAY

AFE introduced regular passenger trains on Jan 15, 2007 between Montevideo and San José with Mon to Fri one, Sat two trains in each direction

VENEZUELA

For the first time in 8 years gasoline prices will increase significantly during 2007. Part of theses additional income will be used for railway construction and operation.
