FLB News VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION The meeting of 01st Decmber 2007 has been postponed to the 19th January 2008! The next meeting will take place on the 19th January 2008 at Winterthur, at the old Nagelfabrik "Nagli" (old Nails factory), St. Gallerstrase 138, opposite Winterthur-Grüze railway station. This can be reached by S12 (Seen branch) and S26 to Winterthur-Grüze station or by Bus 3, 5 and 14 to Grüzestrasse, then 10 minutes walk straight ahead along St. Gallerstrasse (do not turn off) ARGENTINA On October 2, 2007 the Argentine Government issued an international call for reconstruction of the 400 km long Buenos Aires - Mar del Plata line as a high speed railway. The project may cost about USD1 billion. The famous tourist train Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) will run again from March 2008 after rehabilitation of the railway line from Salta to the Viaducto La Polvorilla. Ferrobaires/UEPFP reinstated the daily service between 25 de Mayo and Bolivar and the weekly service Bolivar - Daireaux. BRASIL The new North-South-Railway which is under construction may reach further than to Anápolis (near Brasília) as planned. New plans are giving Santa Fé do Sul as new terminating point. From there it would be easier to convey goods from São Paulo and Mato Grosso states to the Northern port of São Luis. Northeast Brazilian freight railway CFN reached for the first time in more than years a deficit free result. After 5 years without traffic CFN finally repairs the 482 km long line Recife - Lourenço de Albuquerque - Arapiraca (Alagoas). Our member Ulrich Meier learned at Uyuni that the international train Calama - Uyuni has been reduced to the Bolivian part of the line from Oct. 11, 2007 on. There are different versions for the withdrawal on the Chilean part of the international line. One source was telling that the coach is under repair. The existing suburban train of San José is well working; this encourages the government to plan a modern light rail line through the city. One point is dividing the parties. State Railway INCOFER wants to maintain the narrow 1067 mm gauge, while government agencies want to use the international 1435 mm gauge, fearing to fail to get rolling stock for the narrow gauge. Siquirres Police got a 4 seats vehicle from state railway INCOFER. With this vehicle the Police makes its rounds over the railway lines in and around the city. CUBA The Venezuelan Government is helping Cuba in rehabilitating the run-down state railway UFC with the sum of USD100 million. The money will first be used for track rehabilitation. In a second stage passenger coaches may be bought as well as some more Chinese built diesel locomotives. New freight wagons are being delivered from Iranian builder VagonPars. Kansas City Southern which operates freight trains between the USA and Mexico will soon build a new bridge across the Rio Grande River border at Laredo, this in conjunction with a new road which will detour road traffic around Laredo city. The bridge will be a rail/road bridge speeding up freight trains. Construction may commence after 2008.
