LATIN AMERICA NEWS

ARGENTINA

Ferrobaires/UEPFP suspended definitively the Buenos Aires - Tandil train, even the replacing road service was withdrawn.

SEFECHA of Chaco province introduced a three times per week passenger service in November 2007 to Cañada Ombú, South of Los Amores in Santa Fe province.

BRASIL

Espirito Santo state will have its steam loco hauled museum train from March 2008. Trains will run every weekend between Viana and Domingo Martins.

CHILE

In contrast to other years EFE offers no expanded long-distance service during Summer 2007/2008. Trains from Santiago to Talcahuano and Temuco are still withdrawn.

ECUADOR

As from January 1, 2008 the number of trains will increase on some stretches of the Quito - Duran line, details can be found soon on http://www.fahrplancenter.com/AIFFLAEcuador03.html. Finally the railway could import a greater quantity of new sleepers and the government released finally 30m US$ for infrastructure rehabilitation.

PERU

There are plans to ban all railway lines from the city of Cuzco. The standard gauge station Wanchaq will be replaced by a structure outside the city and the narrow gauge line should commence at Poroy to close the zig-zag section of the line which passes through some slums on the outer suburbs. Perhaps a new line avoiding Cuzco may be built between a point South of Cuzco and Urubamba.

URUGUAY

AFE reintroduces passenger train services on Jan 2, 2008, between Montevideo and Florida (109 km) exactly 20 years after its suspension. Monday to Saturday one pair of trains will run.

The AFE presidency sent a letter to the Uruguayan Transport Ministry stating that the old Montevideo Central station should be reopened for train services, because the Uruguayan people and railway workers want it and that this station is a historical landmark, which could only be used for railway operations. Probably pressure from Grupo de Pasajeros (Passenger group) against AFE had some influence.
